In cooperation with the fuel cell research center ZBT gGmbH and HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co. KG the research project ‚E-Binnenschiff‘ has started on 1 May 2016

In order to meet the mobility needs of industry and society in the long term, there is a need for sustainable concepts. Above all, it is important to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in general. An important contribution to this is expected of an electrical operation of vehicles (electro-mobility).

Inland navigation, which is of special significance for North Rhine-Westphalia, is in the focus of this project. As regards inland waterborne transport, electrical drives are to be found almost exclusively within niches, i.e. on inland lakes of within ferry traffic. Only a few approaches can be seen within conventional waterborne freight transport as well as passenger shipping.

This project intends to develop new ways to tap the existing potential for the application of electric drive systems within the inland navigation market and to generally contribute to the reduction of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. To make this, a guide to support the technical planning and an interactive software tool for assessing the ecological and economic effects are developed. In addition, a detailed design will be established, which refers to a quite common constellation (ship type, operating area) having particularly good prospects to be implemented into the market.

Realistically, it can be assumed that the introduction of electric drives take place only gradually. This was in the conception of the project, as in addition to pure electric drives also hybrid systems are dealt with and beyond the possibilities of retrofitting given careful consideration.
