This project focuses on inland navigation which is of special importance for North Rhine-Westphalia. Today, electric drive systems can be found nearly exclusively in niches, e.g. on inland lakes or in ferry traffic. Only a few such concepts exist within traditional freight navigation or passenger shipping.
The aim of the project is to point out ways how to develop the potential existing within commercial shipping with regard to the use of electric drive systems thereby contributing to a significant reduction of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. To make this, a guide to help the technical planning and an interactive software tool for assessing the ecological and economic effects are developed. In addition, a detailed design is created that refers to a constellation (type of ship, operating area) that can be called consistently and has particularly good prospects for implementation.
