Das Akronym PROMINENT steht für „Promoting Innovation in the Inland Waterways Transport Sector“. Im Rahmen des dreijährigen Projektes wurden zahlreiche Ansätze zur Verbesserung der Umweltfreundlichkeit der Binnenschifffahrt weiterentwickelt und teilweise als Pilotanwendung realisiert.

Binnenschiffer/-innen haben einen mobilen Arbeitsplatz und verbringen oft mehrere Wochen ununterbrochen an Bord ihres Schiffes. Ihr Arbeitsbereich ist somit stark mit ihrem Lebens- und Freizeitbereich verknüpft. Ihre Aus- und Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten sind dadurch mit höheren Hürden als in „stationären“ Berufen verbunden.
Auch hierdurch bedingt ist die Beschäftigungssituation in der Binnenschifffahrt durch einen Mangel an Fachkräfte- und Unternehmernachwuchs gekennzeichnet.
