FKB – Study to investigate the promotion of smaller and/or constructively optimized inland waterway vessels

The study examines the challenges posed by increasingly frequent low-water conditions for inland waterway transport, as well as the issue of the declining availability of smaller inland waterway vessels. It analyses the technical options and economic feasibility of possible measures, as well as the level of funding required for small and/or structurally optimised inland waterway vessels.

Inland waterway skippers have a mobile workplace and often spend several weeks at a time on board their vessel. Their working environment is therefore closely intertwined with their living and leisure areas. As a result, their opportunities for training and further education face greater obstacles than in ‘stationary’ occupations.
Partly as a result of this, the employment situation in inland waterway transport is characterised by a shortage of skilled workers and the next generation of business leaders.

For years now, the handling of containerised inland waterway vessels at seaports – particularly at ARA ports – has resulted in significant time losses and, consequently, a loss of efficiency for the vessels concerned, especially when small quantities of containers are handled at a large number of seaport terminals.
