Ship Development
The DST can help you in many different ways as regards ship development covering both new buildings and retrofit measures.
At the beginning of the development, the identification of the ship concept matching the transport task goes along with the determination of the main dimensions as well as the propulsion and steering device. The DST’s comprehensive database and extensive experience facilitate a first rough estimation of the propulsion power needed. On your request, also a detailed economic efficiency calculation is drawn up.
In a second step, a preliminary draft of the general plan and the lines plan are developed. The DST can undertake this work or give advisory support. In addition to the drafts (ín the most usual data formats) the hydrostatic calculations are carried out. If desired, strength, trim and leakage calculations round off the design phase.
Even if the development of the hull form is ideally based on existing experience from similar vessels, the ship’s flow around should be investigated by numerical methods. A particularly complex flow around the aft ship arises in shallow water conditions.
Despite the constant improvement and further development of numerical methods they do however not permit a quantitative-reliable statement on the major ship characteristics (propulsion power, stopping ability, manoeuvring behavior etc.) when running in restricted fairways. After completion of the preparatory work described above ship’s properties should therefore be validated using experimental methods.
